About this model
A curled strip of shed tree bark, grey on the outside with a rusty orange inner face where it peeled away from the trunk. The edges are split and ragged, the kind of scrap that collects at the foot of an old pine. It is tiny, about a foot and a half long and half a foot wide, sitting almost flat on the ground.
Scatter a few pieces under trees or beside a fallen log and a forest floor stops looking like a bare plane. It blocks nothing and hides nothing, so treat it purely as dressing. Clusters of it can hint that something has been stripping trees nearby, which gives players a clue to read before the fight starts.
Ideas for the table
- Fresh bark strips torn from the trunks at shoulder height reveal that an owlbear is marking its territory along the trail.
- A ranger tracking a fugitive notices a trampled line of bark debris leading away from the path into a thicket.
- Druids at a woodland shrine have laid bark pieces in a spiral, and stepping on one alerts the guardian spirit.
