The place

Setting: Dusk in the pine hills, campfire smoke and evening mist along the brook

A bandit stronghold in the pine hills. A ring of sharpened logs stands on a levelled rise in a clearing the bandits cut, stumps and felled trunks all round it, with a two-cell gate to the south flanked by lookout platforms with steps up. The old watchtower they call the Wolf's Tooth stands on the north-east corner. Inside are the chief's timber longhouse under mossy tiles, a looted merchant's pavilion and canvas tents with a stolen cart, a big fire with log seats, firewood and a water butt, and a stockade pen in the south-west corner. Lift the roofs in Play and the longhouse is furnished: a fire pit down the middle under the smoke hole, long tables, the chief's chair with a looted bed behind it, and the hoard heaped at the far end.

Below the camp a brook runs through the woods with evening mist gathering along it, and the trail fords it on stepping stones before climbing to the gate. The bugbear chief Grask Wolf's-Tooth holds his hall, hobgoblins and orcs sit round the fires, and a hobgoblin archer on the gate platform and two goblin lookouts in the trees by the trail are hidden from the players. Two captives, a merchant and a pilgrim, wait in the pen. The party, a ranger, a dwarf fighter, a druid and a tiefling warlock, is crossing the ford.

Close-up.

Encounters it was built for

  • The ford: the lookouts in the trees see the party first, and the stepping stones are slow going under arrows.
  • Storm the gate: two platforms, an archer on one, and a two-square gap to push through.
  • Free the captives: the pen is inside the wall at the far corner from the gate, and the orcs are by the fire.
  • The chief's hall: one door, a fire pit down the middle, and the bugbear between the party and the hoard.
  • Over the palisade at night: drag the clock to midnight and the campfires light the yard and blind the guards.

Tips

  • In Play, press U to lift the roof off the longhouse and fight round the fire pit inside.
  • Mark the archer and the lookouts Hidden from players, and show each one when it first shoots.
  • The rise is real terrain: the ruler counts the height from the ford up to the gate.
  • Brush fog over the camp and reveal it as the party gets eyes over the palisade.
  • Start combat and every bandit rolls into initiative with HP on the token card; the captives can be dragged out of initiative.
