The place
Setting: Mid-morning sun on market day
A market town on market day. A cobbled square opens round a fountain with a statue in its basin, ringed with stalls, awnings, a food stall and a merchant's tent, their fronts to the open middle. A stone church with a tall spire closes the north side between timber town houses, the road comes in from the south past a windmill on its rise and the miller's balconied house, and a millpond with a plank jetty lies in the south-east among birches and reeds.
Three buildings on the square are places the party goes into, each with its door onto the cobbles and a furnished room under a roof that lifts in Play: the smithy, stone under clay tiles, with its forge fire, grindstone and quench barrels; the general store, brick under terracotta, with a counter, shelves and stock; and the guildhall, an L of red brick with tables laid under a chandelier, bookcases and a clock. A minstrel plays at the fountain, a herbalist works the food stall, the smith and the shopkeeper are at work, and the party walks in from the south road. Trouble is already in the crowd: a pickpocket hidden from the players, a thug by the stalls and a bugbear in the lane by the church.
What the recipe places
- 7 floor and road ops
- 1 wall runs
- 62 props, lines and scatters
- 1 lights and effects
- 11 miniatures

Encounters it was built for
- The pickpocket: a purse goes missing, and the chase runs through the stalls, round the fountain and into the lanes.
- A brawl in the square: stalls, carts and the fountain kerb as cover, townsfolk to keep out of it.
- The bugbear in the lane: a collector for someone, and the guildhall is who owes.
- A shopping session that becomes a heist: the general store's counter, the smithy's stock, the guildhall's strongroom.
- Market-day festival: the minstrel at the fountain draws a crowd, and someone in it is not here for the music.
Tips
- In Play, press U to lift the roofs and step into the smithy, the store or the guildhall.
- Mark the pickpocket Hidden from players and show it when the purse goes missing.
- Drag the time-of-day slider to evening for lanterns and long shadows over the square.
- Use the room tool to add a building of your own to the square; its roof joins the house it touches.
- Pings (double-click) point the players at a stall without moving anyone's token.
