No server to rent if all you need is the table
The Forge hosts Foundry VTT so a group does not have to run its own server, and adds a marketplace and tools on top. TerrainTale is a different answer to the same chore: a 3D tabletop that is already online, or one small Node server if you prefer to host it yourself.
Side by side
| Topic | TerrainTale | The Forge |
|---|---|---|
| What it is | A 3D virtual tabletop | Hosting and services for Foundry VTT |
| Software needed | None beyond a browser | A Foundry licence, hosted for you |
| The map | A 3D scene from a realistic library | Whatever your Foundry setup and modules provide |
| Modules | None to manage | Foundry modules, installed through the service |
| Self-hosting | Optional: a single Node server | The point is not having to |
| Rules automation | None, by design | Through Foundry systems |
| Measuring | Feet with diagonal rule, waypoints and height | Foundry's grid tools |
| Pricing | Free plan with one saved scene; Premium $6/month or $48/year | Monthly or annual hosting tiers |
The Forge (and Foundry Virtual Tabletop) is a trademark of its owners and is not affiliated with TerrainTale. Feature notes describe the other product in general terms as we understand it at the time of writing; check its site for current details.
One less moving part
A Foundry setup has the software, the modules and the host. TerrainTale is one thing: sign in, build the scene, share the link. Saved scenes also export as JSON, so they are not locked to an account.

Or host it yourself
Groups who like owning their table can run the single Node server on their own machine or a small VPS. There is no module stack to keep in step with updates.
Where The Forge is still the better pick
Groups invested in Foundry: its systems, automation, modules and purchased content. The Forge keeps all of that running without a home server, and TerrainTale does not replace any of it.
Moving across
There is no Foundry or Forge importer. Rebuild key scenes with the room tool, terrain brushes and the realistic library, or describe them to an AI assistant and import the scene recipe as JSON. Token art you own becomes standees.

Questions

Can I self-host TerrainTale?
Yes. It runs as a single Node server; see the self-hosting page.
Can I import Foundry worlds?
No. There is no importer for Foundry content.
What does Premium add?
Up to 200 saved scenes instead of one, and importing your own models and portraits, for $6 a month or $48 a year.
