The place
Setting: Dusk in falling snow, smoke from every chimney
A hamlet on a levelled shelf in the pinewoods, snowed in at dusk with the snow still falling on the wind. A log palisade runs along the north, west and east sides with its gate on the north track and a breach in the north-east corner, and the trodden ways between the doors run out along the road to the south past a frozen pond with a hole broken in its ice. In the middle is the green, churned round a campfire, with braziers either side of the mead hall door and a cart left in the snow.
The mead hall is an L of dark timber under slate: lift the roofs in Play and there is a hearth on the gable wall, two tables laid with benches under a hanging lantern, stores along the wall and a sleeping room in the wing. Two stone cottages, each with a stove, a bed and a table, a thatched house and a raised storehouse make up the rest. The party stands round the fire turning toward the breach, where a wolf pack has come through: one already between the hall and a cottage, and one still hidden in the western treeline. The villagers shelter in the hall and their cottage.
What the recipe places
- 2 wall runs
- 47 props, lines and scatters
- 7 lights and effects
- 11 miniatures

Encounters it was built for
- The breach: wolves pour through the gap in the palisade, and the party has to hold the green until the villagers are inside.
- Pack tactics in the snow: the wolves circle, and the hidden one comes from the treeline behind.
- Siege of the mead hall: one door, a hearth, and the villagers counting on the party.
- On the ice: the frozen pond is a short cut with a hole in it.
- The trail into the pines: follow the pack back to its den through the snow at nightfall.
Tips
- In Play, press U to lift the roofs and see into the mead hall and the cottages.
- Mark the wolf in the treeline Hidden from players and show it when the pack circles.
- The snow is a scene setting: turn the weather off for a still winter morning, or up to a blizzard.
- Wolves move 40 feet in 5e; drag one and the ruler shows how far that reaches across the green.
- Brush fog over the woods outside the palisade and reveal them when the party goes after the pack.
