The place

Setting: Cold dawn, thin snow on the wind and sea fog on the water

A shelf of level ground at the head of a fjord, rock walls rising on either side with pines and firs clinging to them and a wooded ridge behind. The sea fills the south of the map and shelves up a shingle beach with rocks in the surf, a plank jetty runs out into the water, and fish-drying racks, barrels and crates stand along the waterfront. Thin snow blows in off the sea at dawn, sea fog lies on the water, and smoke rises from every roof.

The longhouse is a T of timber under slate: lift the roofs in Play and the long hearth burns down the middle with tables and benches against the walls, and the jarl's chamber opens off the north side. Two stone huts, each with a fire ring, a bed and stores, and a raised storehouse complete the steading. One longboat has been run up on the shingle and a second rides at anchor. The raiders are coming ashore: their hobgoblin captain leads three orcs up the beach, a fourth creeps round behind the west hut, hidden from the players, and the defenders, a fighter, a dwarf fighter, an elf ranger and a cleric, are formed up before the longhouse door with a villager sheltering inside.

Close-up.

Encounters it was built for

  • Hold the beach: the raiders come up the shingle from their longboat while the defenders hold the longhouse door.
  • The hidden raider: one creeps round the west hut toward the longhouse while everyone watches the beach.
  • Fight on the jetty: planks into deep water, and a raider wading in from the anchored boat.
  • Take the longboat: the raiders' boat on the shingle is their only way home, and a prize.
  • Inside the longhouse: the long hearth splits the hall, and the jarl's chamber is the last stand.

Tips

  • In Play, press U to lift the roofs and fight inside the longhouse.
  • Mark the raider behind the west hut Hidden from players and show it when it strikes.
  • The sea is real water: a mini in the shallows stands on the bed, and the ruler reads the depth as a drop.
  • Drag the time-of-day slider to night and the long hearth lights the hall.
  • Start combat and the raiders and defenders roll into initiative with HP on their token cards.
