Best VTT for Daggerheart: Where to Play Online

The best virtual tabletop for Daggerheart

Daggerheart, from Darrington Press, plays loose: no initiative order, spotlight passing, Hope and Fear dice, and ranges described as Melee, Very Close, Close, Far and Very Far rather than counted squares. That changes what a VTT needs to do well.

What Daggerheart needs from a table

Duality dice (two d12s, Hope and Fear) and a way to track the GM's Fear pool and each player's Hope. Character sheets with cards for domains and features. Maps are optional: many tables play theater of the mind, and those that use a map care about range bands more than exact squares.

Demiplane: the official character tools

Darrington Press partnered with Demiplane for Daggerheart's digital character builder and sheets, so it is the natural place for players' characters. It is not a battle map, so groups pair it with a VTT or play without one.

Foundry, Roll20 and others

Foundry has a community Daggerheart system with sheets and duality rolls, released under Darrington Press's community licence, and Darrington Press has announced official Daggerheart content for Foundry. Roll20 can pull Demiplane's Daggerheart characters and adversaries straight into its tabletop. Both put a map, tokens and dice in one place. Support is moving quickly for a newer game, so check each tool's current Daggerheart page before committing.

Where TerrainTale fits

When a fight deserves a place, TerrainTale gives you a 3D scene with real elevation and light. There is no initiative requirement: you can leave the tracker off and pass the spotlight by conversation, and use the ruler to settle whether something is Close or Far. Duality dice are rolled in the dice roller (2d12), but Hope and Fear are tracked by you, not by the app.

  • No Daggerheart sheets or Hope/Fear automation
  • Ruler measures in feet or squares; you map that to range bands
  • Shared rooms: players join by link and move their own minis
Play mode at Thornwall: initiative tracker, a token card for the fighter, HP bars over every mini

A combination that works

Sheets in Demiplane, voice in Discord, and a map in whichever VTT your group likes. If you want the map to be the memorable part of the session, that is the gap TerrainTale fills.

Questions

What is the official Daggerheart VTT?

Darrington Press's digital partner for character creation and sheets is Demiplane. Battle maps come from general VTTs such as Foundry, Roll20, or TerrainTale.

Does Daggerheart need a grid?

No. It uses range bands, and many tables play with no map. A map helps in set-piece fights, measured by eye or with a ruler.

Can TerrainTale roll duality dice?

You can roll 2d12 in the dice roller and read Hope and Fear yourself. It does not track the Hope or Fear pools.

Does TerrainTale force initiative?

No. The initiative tracker is optional, so spotlight-style play works fine.

Is TerrainTale free for Daggerheart?

The free plan has the full table and keeps one saved scene; Premium ($6 a month) keeps 200 and imports your own models.

Ready to put a map on the table?

Open the builder and start, no account needed. Sixteen starter scenes are on the welcome screen; sign up free when you want to save one or play it with your group.
