About this model
A chessboard with black and white squares and a full set of black and white pieces standing in their starting positions. The board is about 2 ft square and half a foot tall with the pieces in place.
Put it on a table in a tavern, a wizard's study, a noble's parlour or a soldiers' barracks. It is pure dressing in combat but a strong story prop: a game in progress, a living chess puzzle, a wager with a devil. It also gives players something to discuss with an NPC who would rather not talk about the real issue.
Ideas for the table
- A devil offers to return a stolen soul if the paladin can beat it at chess.
- The positions on the abandoned board show the final move of a famous match, and that move opens the vault.
- Two old soldiers in the barracks refuse to talk until the party helps finish their game.
