About this model
Loose grey gravel of small angular stones, speckled with lighter and darker chips. It has the crisp, slightly noisy texture of a raked path or a quarry floor. The tile covers a single 5 ft square and sits flat on the ground.
Use it for garden paths, carriage drives outside manor houses, riverbanks, mine yards and the floors of rough caves. It gives a hard, dry surface that contrasts well with grass and mud. Many DMs note that gravel crunches underfoot, which makes it a fine excuse for a stealth check when someone tries to creep across it at night.
Ideas for the table
- Guards patrol a manor's gravel drive, and the party must cross it without a sound to reach the servants' door.
- A dwarven quarry yard of loose gravel becomes a battleground when a rust monster crawls out of the spoil heaps.
- A riverbank of grey shingle is where the kelpie waits, and the gravel shows wet hoofprints going into the water.
