About this model
A landscape-format picture frame in white or pale painted wood surrounding a dark, almost black canvas. The frame is wide with moulded edges. It is about 2.5 ft wide and 1.5 ft tall, with almost no depth.
The empty or dark canvas makes it flexible: a painting that has been blacked out, a portal, a portrait waiting to be filled or a simple picture glimpsed in shadow. Hang it in a manor, a studio or a gallery. Its blank surface is a natural hook for something strange to appear. The pale frame also stands out well against dark panelled walls.
Ideas for the table
- A figure slowly appears on the dark canvas over three nights, and it looks like one of the characters.
- The painter's final work has been painted over in black, and scraping it reveals a map.
- The canvas is a doorway into a pocket dimension where the artist is hiding.
