Free vs. Premium: what actually changes
It's a short list. TerrainTale gates exactly two things behind Premium — how many scenes you can keep saved, and whether you can bring your own files onto the table. Everything else, from the builder to shared rooms, is identical on both plans.

Gated: saved scenes
Free keeps one saved scene in your account's library; Premium keeps up to 200, the technical cap. The limit only blocks adding a new scene once the slot is full — re-saving, renaming and deleting a scene you already have are never restricted, on either plan.

Gated: your own files
Premium can bring its own files onto the table: imported model files through the shelf's Import button or a file dropped on the window, and your own pictures as token portraits. On Free, that Import button carries a Premium badge and opens the paywall instead of a file picker; a model dropped on the window, or a portrait chosen for a token, does the same. Anything imported before hitting the limit — or brought in on a previous Premium subscription — keeps working; only adding new ones while on Free is gated.
- Free: 1 saved scene, built-in library only for new imports
- Premium ($6/mo or $48/yr): 200 saved scenes, plus your own model files and portrait images
Not gated, on either plan
The scene builder, the entire built-in library (around 330 realistic assets — floors, walls, props, nature, KayKit characters), play mode, shared rooms, silhouette standee tokens, and scene export and import are the same on Free and Premium. The initiative tracker, the distance ruler, and the lighting system are part of the whole table on the free plan too — none of them are Premium features.
Players never pay
Only the account hosting a scene needs a plan at all. Anyone joining a shared room to play — moving their own mini, using their own ruler, seeing the initiative tracker — does so without an account of their own being charged anything; the plan applies to the host's saved-scene library and own-file imports, not to who can sit at the table. That keeps a group's cost to at most one subscription, held by whoever's running the campaign, rather than something every player at the table needs to think about.
The price
Premium is $6 a month or $48 a year (about $4/mo if paid annually), billed through Creem as merchant of record — card details never reach TerrainTale's own server. Cancelling keeps Premium active until the current period ends, and downgrading never deletes a scene over the new limit; the account just can't add another until it's back under one.
Reading the list one more time
It's worth restating because it's easy to assume more is gated than actually is: two things change, saved-scene count and your-own-file imports. Nothing about how the table plays, how combat is tracked, how a room is lit, or how a scene moves in and out of JSON depends on which plan an account is on. If a feature you're reading about elsewhere on the site doesn't say Premium next to it, it isn't — the plan card on the account page and the pricing page itself are the two places that list the gate accurately.
