Arcana Unleashed subclasses: what the eight do at the table

Arcana Unleashed, the sourcebook anchoring Wizards of the Coast's Season of Magic, reached general release on 15 September 2026 after early access in local game shops from 1 September. It carries eight arcane subclasses, and the headline number is misleading: six of them are 2024-rules updates of subclasses that already existed, and only two have never been printed before. Those two, a spellcasting monk and a warlock with a companion, are the ones that change what happens on a battle map.

What shipped, and when

Wizards released Arcana Unleashed and its companion adventure Arcana Unleashed: Deadfall together on 15 September 2026, with participating local game stores selling them from 1 September. The pair closes out the Season of Magic, the July to September 2026 block in the release calendar Wizards laid out in March 2026.

Beyond the subclasses, Wizards has said the sourcebook contains 33 new and revised spells, 47 magic items, 19 magical creatures, nine arcane factions, six group patrons and a short introductory adventure. Deadfall is the campaign half: a levels 11 to 20 adventure against the archlich Szass Tam in Thay, with more than twenty maps and a stat block for Tam himself at CR 25.

The eight, and which two are actually new

Wizards confirmed the full list ahead of release. Four of the eight go to the wizard, which is unusual for a single book and tells you where the design attention went: this is a book about arcane casters first and about the classes that borrow from them second. The monk, the warlock, the cleric and the fighter get one each, and the other seven classes get nothing, so a party without a caster has little reason to buy it.

Six of these are returning options brought to the 2024 rules: the four wizard schools last printed in the 2014 Player's Handbook, the Arcane Archer from Xanathar's Guide to Everything, and the Arcana Domain from the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. The Vestige Patron and the Warrior of the Mystic Arts are the new ones.

  • Cleric: Arcana Domain, returning.
  • Fighter: Arcane Archer, returning.
  • Monk: Warrior of the Mystic Arts, new.
  • Warlock: Vestige Patron, new.
  • Wizard: Conjurer, Enchanter, Necromancer and Transmuter, all returning.

Warrior of the Mystic Arts: a monk who casts

The new monk subclass picks up spellcasting at level 3, drawing cantrips and spells from the sorcerer list, with new spells prepared as monk levels arrive. Its distinguishing trick is the exchange between the two economies: Focus Points can become spell slots and slots can become Focus Points, so the resource a monk normally spends on Flurry of Blows is also the resource that powers a shield or a misty step.

At level 17 it can replace two of the Unarmed Strikes in a Flurry of Blows with a level 1 or level 2 sorcerer spell, which is the capstone that makes the concept work rather than merely coexist. Wizards adjusted several of the book's subclasses upward shortly before release, and this one was among those reported to have been strengthened.

Vestige Patron: a warlock with a second token

The Vestige Patron warlock serves a dying god that has kept a fragment of its power, and the subclass gives that fragment a body. At level 3 the warlock gains a Vestige Companion that acts in combat and follows the warlock's commands, with the companion's type and abilities chosen fresh each time it is summoned. Its spell list draws on cleric domain spells, which is a wider range of support magic than warlocks usually reach.

A companion is the mechanic most likely to slow a table down, because it is a second thing to move and a second initiative entry. Decide at character creation whether the companion acts on the warlock's turn or its own, note the companion's size so its base is the right number of squares, and keep its hit points on the token rather than on a sheet nobody can see.

What the returning six change

The four wizard schools are the interesting part of the reprint, because the 2014 versions were widely considered the weakest subclasses in the game outside Evocation and Divination. Bringing Conjurer, Enchanter, Necromancer and Transmuter to the 2024 chassis is less a new option than a repair, and whether it succeeded is what most of the early commentary is arguing about.

The Arcane Archer is the one to watch on a battle map. It was always a fighter who bent the rules of line and range, and in a 2024 frame that means a martial character who can create an effect at a point rather than on a target. For a DM that changes how you place cover, because a player who can reach round a pillar makes the pillar a smaller problem than you planned.

Running the new options on a map

Two practical notes for the first sessions. A companion needs a physical place to stand, so agree its creature size before play: a Medium companion is one square, a Large one covers 2 by 2. And a monk who casts will want to move, cast and strike in the same turn, so expect more movement per round than your usual monk and build rooms with somewhere to move to.

None of that needs new software. If you run on a virtual tabletop, the useful habit is simply to give the companion its own token with its own hit points and its own line in the initiative order from the first fight, rather than tracking it in the margin of a character sheet and losing it by round three.
