D&D: World of Warcraft and the Season of Champions: what is confirmed as of September 2026
D&D: World of Warcraft, the first book in Wizards of the Coast's Universes Beyond line, reaches shops and D&D Beyond on 17 November 2026, with early access for D&D Beyond's Master tier from 3 November. On 15 September 2026 Wizards set out the organised play season that goes with it, Season of Champions, running in game shops from 3 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and on 16 September Dungeons and Dragons Fan reported that a World of Warcraft campaign starts on the Dungeon Masters actual play show on 23 September. What is in the book has been public since Gen Con; how its subclasses work at the table has not.

What Wizards has said is in the book
D&D Beyond's own overview, published on 30 July 2026, is the source for the contents. The book gives rules for playing all thirteen World of Warcraft classes through D&D's existing classes, with what it calls over 40 specialisations. Six subclasses are new: the Oath of the Ebon Blade and the Oath of the Holy for the Paladin, the Demon Hunter for the Ranger, the Shadow Domain and the Discipline Domain for the Cleric, and the Path of the Elements for the Barbarian. Three are updated versions of existing subclasses: the Swashbuckler Rogue, the Path of the Spiritual Guardian Barbarian and the Warrior of Mystic Brews Monk.
There are sixteen playable species, eleven of them new to D&D: Dracthyr, Draenei, Earthen, Forsaken, Haranir, Mechagnome, Pandaren, Tauren, Troll, Vulpera and Worgen, alongside Azeroth versions of the Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Human and Orc. The book adds more than 60 spells, among them Rune Strike, Demon Spikes and Moonfire, more than 25 magic items including mounts and companion creatures, more than 50 monsters plus 30 dungeon boss stat blocks, and two systems new to D&D: professions, more than ten of them, and a renown track for more than twenty factions.
- Six new subclasses, three updated ones.
- Sixteen species, eleven of them new.
- Seven dungeons: Azjol-Nerub, Blackfathom Deeps, Deadmines, Dire Maul, Onyxia's Lair, Scarlet Monastery and Shadowfang Keep.
What has not been shown: the mechanics
As of 16 September 2026 Wizards has published names and counts, not features. Nobody outside the company has said what the Demon Hunter's Metamorphosis becomes in D&D terms, what a Discipline Domain cleric's shield does that a Life cleric's healing does not, or how the Path of the Elements Barbarian chooses between fire, frost and storm. Vice's 2 August 2026 rundown of every subclass and species lists them and notes that a species choice can grant a starting renown score, and stops there, because the previews stop there.
The same is true of the seven dungeons. They are described as reimagined for tabletop play with boss encounters, which means encounter maps and stat blocks rather than a video game's instanced rooms, but no map has been shown. The one adventure with hard numbers is the separate Icecrown Citadel map pack: five double-sided poster maps at 22 by 30 inches, two token sheets, and a digital adventure for levels 16 to 20 across five chapters, ten maps and ten boss encounters, with 16 magic items. Treat anything more specific about how these play as unconfirmed until the book is in hands on 3 November.
Season of Champions: the dates announced on 15 September
ICv2 reported the organised play details on 15 September 2026. Scheduling for Wizards Play Network shops opened on 8 September. Shops that want a physical play kit must sign up by 5 October, and the first 1,000 qualifying shops get one: five printed copies of the adventure, twenty pregenerated character sheets, five printed double-sided maps, twenty-five season-exclusive d20s, ten pins split between Alliance and Horde symbols for DMs and helpers, and organiser instructions. A digital play kit follows on 14 October.
Play itself runs in three parts. Local game store early access to the book begins on 3 November. D&D Encounters Celebration events run from 6 to 29 November, and weekly play events from 11 November 2026 to 3 January 2027. The season's adventure is set in the Deadmines, one of the seven dungeons in the book. This is the same Seasons and Encounters structure Wizards introduced in 2026 and ran for Red Wizards' Gambit in the Season of Magic, now applied to a licensed setting.
- 5 October 2026: physical play kit sign-up deadline for shops.
- 3 November 2026: early access in shops and on D&D Beyond Master tier.
- 17 November 2026: general release; French, Italian, German and Spanish editions in 2027.
What it means on a grid
Two things in the confirmed list matter for anyone who runs fights on a battle map. The first is thirty dungeon boss stat blocks in one book, which is more boss-scale monsters than most D&D books carry, and the Icecrown pack's ten boss encounters on ten maps on top. Boss fights on a grid need room: a Huge creature is a 3 by 3 block and needs a floor of at least 8 by 8 to move, and a video game dungeon's final chamber is exactly the kind of space that translates well to a 3D map with height. Expect the book's dungeons to reward tables that draw them.
The second is mounts as magic items. D&D's mounted combat rules are short, a mount at least one size larger, half your Speed to mount, controlled or independent, and a book built around a game where everyone rides is likely to lean on them. A Large mount occupies 2 by 2 squares and the rider shares that block; a table that has not used mounts since the starter set should reread those rules before November.

Where it sits in Universes Beyond
Universes Beyond was announced at Gen Con on 30 and 31 July 2026 as a line of licensed crossovers in the pattern of the Magic: The Gathering line of the same name. EN World's report of 31 July listed three products: World of Warcraft on 3 November 2026, Dark Sun on 30 January 2027, described as D&D's first mature-rated setting, and a Star Wars book on 15 June 2027. Wizards employees told EN World they were trying to strike a delicate balance between the crossovers and the rest of the line, and the report noted that D&D's small annual schedule leaves little room for both.
That balance is also the thing players seem least sure about. Bob World Builder's 15 September survey video found the licensed crossovers were the one part of the summer's announcements some respondents disliked. The World of Warcraft book is the test case: if its dungeons and bosses play well on a table, the argument about whether they belong in D&D gets quieter.
What to watch for before November
Three things would turn the confirmed list into a playable one: a preview of any one subclass's features, a look at one dungeon map, and the price, which none of the sources read for this post state. D&D Beyond's overview lists the book and a Collector's Edition Ultimate Bundle with the map pack, the DM screen and a Murloc promotional mini, and pre-order bonuses including an Icy Throne digital dice set and a Season of Champions mini-adventure. The 23 September actual play launch on Dungeon Masters is the first place the rules will be seen in use, and the digital play kit on 14 October is the first place a DM can read the Deadmines adventure.
